The Power of Love

Lately, I’ve been feeling a little uninspired, which is why I haven’t been writing as much. I know, I know, I know. I always say I’ll post more, and then I don’t. There has been a little bit of a family crisis going on. Well, actually, a big one. My grandfather has been in the hospital, in ICU, for the last three weeks, so all my free time has been spent driving to my hometown and sitting in his room, talking to him, holding his hand, and trying to help out as much as possible. That hasn’t left room for cooking or writing.

Better late than never...

One the things I never thought I would enjoy growing up was eggnog. I know it is the traditional Christmas/Holiday drink, but I’m not a fan of just any creamy drink. Especially ones with eggs in them. Every time I’d pass by the eggnog in the dairy section, my tummy would turn just a little bit.

We Jammin'

I think mid-January is my least favorite time of year. Football is almost over, the once beautiful fluffy snow is now grey slush, there are no days off to look forward to, no parties to get all dolled up for in a little black cocktail dress, the sun hasn’t shown it’s face in weeks, and it has been too cold to go snowboarding. Thanks, but I’m ready for winter to be over!

Little Bit of This...Little Bit of THAT

So I’ve been a little stressed the last few weeks. And when I’m stressed, there are four things that either take my mind off the reasons for stress or help me cope with the stress. Baking, cleaning, writing, and um…well…I’m sure you can guess the last one.

Spicing up the kitchen...

We all have ‘that’ dish that we tend to fall back on. You know, the one you can whip up in your sleep. The one that when you really want to impress someone, you pull this one out. Mine is a miso marinated sea bass. Not only is this my go to dish when trying to impress someone, it is also my go to dish when I just can’t think of anything else to make.

Something Sweet

Something about the holidays makes me want to bake cookies. All different types normally, but this year, the only kind I felt like making were sugar cookies. With edible glitter. Because I think that glitter makes everything BEAUTIFUL! The restaurant I work at has the most amazing Christmas decorations (almost as awesome as my lovely Christmas tree, but not quite…). The restaurant has Christmas trees made out of FORKS! They are so cool! And covered in glitter, which means there is glitter EVERYWHERE! I love it!!!! Some say I have a strange obsession with glitter. I don’t know why anyone would think that…I mean, I only walk into the restaurant everyday and sprinkle glitter all over my hair and chest. That’s normal…right?

Another 'niblet'

Whether you want to admit it or not, December is already almost over. Seriously, Christmas is literally right around the corner. And if you are anything like me, you’ve left most of your holiday shopping for the last minute. Which means you’ve left yourself roughly 5 days to buy presents for like 10 people. Normally, any other year, that wouldn’t be an issue, but did you know that when you work about 80 hours a week, that doesn’t leave much time for shopping? Yeah…it leaves Sunday morning. Awesome.

It's all fun and games until the fire department shows up...

Funny story….well, I didn’t think it was all that funny. My day started off absolutely perfect. I got to sleep in a little bit, read for a little, then it was off to Target (my happy place) for some winter wonderland holiday decoration shopping! I will admit, I may have gone just a wee bit overboard. But in my defense, it was early (or 1pm) and I hadn’t had any coffee (or one travel sized mug AND a large coffee from Starbucks, with an added shot of caramel syrup….).

And the Secret Ingredient Is...

If you live in the Chicago-land area, you have to be familiar with Portillos. They are most famously known for their Italian Beef sandwiches, dripping in au jus so the bread is nothing but a spongy mess of absolute deliciousness…mmmmm, one of the best hangover cures, hands down (although that burger in Napa was pretty close!). Not to mention their super yummy, grease running down your chin, slippery, cheese burgers. Uh-huh! Awe-some!

Mexican Fiesta??? My favorite!!!

I’ve come to the conclusion that I can rarely just enjoy a meal in a restaurant. I always find myself wondering what I would do differently, how I would tailor the dish to my likes, and what other flavors, textures, or colors (weird, I know) would work with it. Lunch my first day in Napa was no different.
